Bearded Dragon Care Guide: Tank, UVB, Diet & Common Mistakes
The central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), native to the arid interior of Australia, walks a weird line between being the easiest reptile to keep and the easiest reptile to mess up. Pet stores sell them as bulletproof starter lizards, then send people home with coil UVB bulbs, red nighttime lights, and a 20-gallon tank they’ll outgrow in three months. The dragon survives for a year, maybe two, and then spirals into metabolic bone disease or chronic dehydration — problems that were completely avoidable with a few hundred dollars’ worth of correct equipment at the start.
None of the mistakes that kill bearded dragons are mysterious. They’re predictable, well-documented, and almost always trace back to three things: lighting, temperature, or diet. Get those right, and you’ve done 90% of the job.

The Tank: Buy the One You’ll End Up With
The single most common piece of bad advice new keepers get is “start small and upgrade later.” A hatchling bearded dragon fits in the palm of your hand, and a 20-gallon looks generous. Then the dragon hits its growth spurt, putting on as much as an inch a week during months 2-4, and suddenly that cozy starter tank is a box the dragon can barely turn around in. The minimum enclosure dimensions you’ll hear cited for an adult are 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet tall. That’s 120 gallons. It sounds enormous when you’re looking at a 6-inch baby, but adults reach 16-24 inches nose to tail (males run larger, females typically 16-20 inches). A dragon that can’t walk more than its own body length in any direction isn’t living in an enclosure — it’s living in a closet.
Front-opening PVC or wood enclosures hold heat better than glass and don’t stress the dragon with reflections. Glass works if you cover three sides so the dragon doesn’t spend its days fighting its own reflection. Screen tops are fine structurally but they let humidity and heat escape, so you’ll need to dial in your heating accordingly.
Substrate is a debate that’s been running for decades in bearded dragon communities, but the evidence has been pointing in one direction for a while now: loose substrate, when paired with correct temperatures and UVB, is safe and enriching for healthy adult dragons. A mix of organic topsoil and play sand (roughly 70/30) packed down firmly gives them something to dig in — and bearded dragons dig. It’s a natural behavior they do to regulate temperature, hunt, and settle in for sleep.
For babies and juveniles, or any dragon recovering from illness, solid substrate makes sense. Ceramic tile, slate, or paper towels eliminate any impaction risk and make cleanup trivial. If you go solid, add a dig box with a handful of soil-sand mix so your dragon still gets to scratch that instinct.
Avoid calcium sand. The stuff turns into cement when wet and is responsible for more impaction surgeries than every other substrate combined. Calcium sand is not a supplement — it’s a digestive risk with good marketing.
Lighting: UVB Is Not Negotiable
If you walk out of this article remembering exactly one sentence, make it this one: bearded dragons need strong UVB lighting or they get metabolic bone disease, and that disease is slow, painful, and irreversible.
In the wild, bearded dragons bask under Australian sunlight for hours every day. Their bodies use UVB radiation to synthesize vitamin D3, which in turn lets them absorb calcium from their food. No UVB means no D3 synthesis means no calcium absorption means their bones literally soften and deform under the weight of their own body.
A linear T5 HO fluorescent tube rated at 10.0 or 12% UVB, mounted inside the enclosure and spanning at least half its length, is the standard. Coil UVB bulbs — the compact spiral ones that screw into a dome fixture — produce a narrow cone of UVB directly beneath them and almost nothing an inch to either side. They’re functionally useless for an animal that needs broad UVB coverage while it basks.
The UVB tube should overlap with the heat lamp so the dragon gets both at once, UVB and warmth, on the same basking spot, because that’s how it works outdoors. Mount the tube 12-18 inches above the basking surface for a T5 12%, measured without a screen blocking any light. Hanging it closer than 12 inches pushes UVB output well above what a bearded dragon needs and risks eye damage, so resist the temptation to drop it low. If the tube sits on top of a mesh screen, know that standard window screen blocks 30-50% of UVB output, so you’ll need to compensate by mounting the tube closer or choosing a stronger bulb.
Replace UVB tubes every 6-12 months regardless of whether they still light up. UVB output degrades on a schedule that has nothing to do with visible brightness. Mark the replacement date on your calendar with a Sharpie on the tube itself — that’s the low-tech solution most breeders swear by.
Heat: Basking Spots and Temperature Gradients
Bearded dragons aren’t like crested geckos or corn snakes that do fine at ambient room temperature. They’re diurnal desert lizards that need a proper basking spot hot enough to drive their digestion.
The surface temperature of the basking platform — measured with an infrared temperature gun, not a stick-on dial thermometer — should hit 100-110°F (38-43°C). The warm side ambient air should hover around 88-95°F. The cool side should stay between 75-80°F. If your dragon spends all day on the cool side, your basking spot is too hot. If it never leaves the basking platform, the rest of the enclosure is too cold.
Halogen flood bulbs produce the most natural basking profile — they emit infrared-A and infrared-B, which penetrate deep into tissue and warm the dragon the same way the sun does. Ceramic heat emitters and deep heat projectors work too, especially if you need heat without visible light at night.
Red bulbs and “nighttime heat lamps” need to exit the hobby. The idea that reptiles can’t see red light was disproved decades ago — bearded dragons absolutely can see it, and having a red light shining all night disrupts their sleep cycles. If your house drops below 65°F at night, use a ceramic heat emitter or a deep heat projector on a thermostat. No visible light after dark.
What to Feed (And When to Panic About It)
A bearded dragon’s diet changes completely as it ages, and getting the timing wrong is a major cause of fatty liver disease in adults.
Hatchlings and juveniles under 6 months are insect-dominant. They need protein to fuel that explosive growth spurt, and they need to eat more often — 2-3 times a day. Dubia roaches, crickets, black soldier fly larvae, and occasional small mealworms or silkworms. Feed as many appropriately-sized insects as they’ll eat in 10-15 minutes per session, then remove the rest. Dust every insect meal with calcium powder (without D3 if your UVB is dialed in; with D3 if you’re still figuring things out). Multivitamin dusting 2-3 times a week.
Between 6-12 months, you start shifting the ratio. By 12 months, an adult bearded dragon’s diet should be roughly 70-80% plant matter and 20-30% insects. The insects don’t stop — they just become a side dish instead of the main course. Adults eat insects 3-4 times a week, and salads every day.
The salad bowl should be a rotation of dark, calcium-rich leafy greens: collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, endive, and escarole. These are your staples. Kale and spinach are fine in moderation but not as daily staples — their oxalate content binds calcium. Romaine and iceberg lettuce are mostly water with negligible nutrition and will give your dragon diarrhea. Think of them as reptile junk food.
Vegetables and occasional fruit round out the bowl: butternut squash, bell peppers, snap peas, and the occasional blueberry or mango slice as a treat. Go light on fruit — maybe once a week, a few small pieces. Bearded dragons have the palate of a health-conscious adult: they genuinely enjoy their greens once they’re used to them, and a dragon that spits out its salad in favor of bugs is one that’s learned you’ll cave and offer insects. Hold the line for a day or two. A healthy dragon will not starve itself.
Gut-load your insects. Crickets and roaches that eat nothing but cardboard egg cartons in a pet store bin are nutritionally hollow. Feed them carrots, sweet potato, collard greens, and commercial gut-load for 24-48 hours before offering them to your dragon. A well-gut-loaded cricket is the difference between a calcium delivery system and an empty calorie.
Brumation: When Your Dragon Vanishes
Sometime in their second winter, your dragon might stop eating, sleep for days at a time, and basically look dead for weeks. This is brumation — a reptile’s version of hibernation — and it’s completely normal for healthy adult dragons.
Before you conclude it’s brumation, rule out illness. A wellness check and fecal test at the vet should confirm your dragon isn’t just sick. If the vet clears them, let them brumate. Don’t offer food. Don’t wake them up to soak them. Make sure they have access to fresh water, keep the enclosure dark and coolish (60-70°F), and check on them weekly without disturbing them. They’ll wake up when their internal clock says it’s spring.
The Things That Go Wrong
Metabolic bone disease shows up first as subtle tremors in the legs and jaw. The dragon that used to launch itself across the enclosure to grab a roach starts missing. The jaw gets slightly rubbery. By the time you can see visible deformity — a curved spine, a twisted jaw, legs that buckle at the joints — the damage is permanent. Prevention is straightforward: correct UVB, correct calcium supplementation, and a diet that isn’t 100% mealworms.
Impaction from loose substrate is almost always actually a husbandry problem dressed up as a substrate problem. A dragon with correct basking temperatures and hydration passes small amounts of ingested substrate without issue. A dragon living with low basking temps and chronic dehydration cannot. If you’re worried about impaction, fix the temperature and hydration before you blame the dirt.
Dehydration shows up as wrinkled skin that doesn’t snap back when pinched, sunken eyes, and thick, yellowed urates in the stool. Beardies get most of their water from food, so fresh daily greens are the first line of defense. A shallow water bowl, weekly misting of the salad, and occasional warm soaks (chin-deep only) handle the rest.
Respiratory infections come from cold, damp enclosures. If you hear wheezing, see bubbles around the nostrils, or notice open-mouth breathing that isn’t heat-related, get to a vet. These don’t resolve on their own and they escalate quickly in reptiles. A bearded dragon in a properly set up 120-gallon with a good UVB tube, a halogen basking spot, and a daily rotation of dark leafy greens will almost never need a vet. The dragons that do show up at clinics are the ones whose owners were told they didn’t need UVB, or that a 40-gallon was fine, or that pellets alone were a complete diet. Quarantine any new dragon for 60 days, get a baseline fecal test done within the first week, and weigh it monthly so you catch the slow drift toward trouble before it becomes an emergency.
