Ball Python Care Guide for Beginners: Enclosure, Heat & Food
Ball pythons are famous for one behavior above all others: refusing to eat. A healthy snake can go eight months without food, and that isn’t sickness or injury, just a decision that it has better things to do. Hognose snakes have a similar reputation for dramatic fasts, and the same rules apply for telling a mood apart from a real problem. New keepers routinely panic through four months of this, then slowly accept that the snake is simply built different. It loses no significant weight, sheds perfectly on schedule, and eventually grabs a rat like nothing happened.
That stretch of indifference teaches more about ball python husbandry than any care sheet ever could. These snakes are hardy animals wrapped around a fragile sense of comfort. They’re famously docile and absurdly easy to keep — right up until something in their enclosure is slightly wrong, at which point they shut down entirely.
The secret to a ball python that eats, sheds, and handles without issue isn’t expensive gear. It’s consistency. Get the temperature and humidity locked in, give them security, and they’ll thrive for twenty years.

Why Ball Pythons Dominate the Snake Market
The ball python (Python regius), named for its habit of curling into a tight ball when startled, is native to the grasslands and forests of West and Central Africa. Walk into any reptile expo in North America and ball pythons will constitute roughly half the animals for sale. The reason is straightforward: they sit comfortably in the middle of every spectrum that matters to a new keeper. Not too big (3-5 feet for most adults, with females pushing the upper end), not too fast, not aggressive, and covered in enough morph variations to make collecting them genuinely addictive.
A corn snake might be technically easier, since it’s more forgiving of humidity mistakes and less prone to hunger strikes, but it’s also faster, slimmer, and harder for a nervous new keeper to handle confidently. A ball python moves at its own deliberate pace and, when startled, balls into a tight sphere rather than launching itself toward the nearest exit. That defensive response, the one that gave them their common name, is a gift to beginners.
They live 20-30 years in captivity. The oldest recorded ball python hit 47 at a zoo in Philadelphia. This isn’t a pet you’ll replace when the kids go to college.
The Enclosure: PVC, Not Glass
There’s a tier list for ball python enclosures and glass tanks are near the bottom. Glass is fine for display, terrible for humidity. It loses heat fast, it loses humidity faster, and the transparent walls on all sides make a prey animal feel perpetually exposed.
PVC enclosures — the 4x2x2 foot panels you screw together, popularized by companies like Animal Plastics, Dubia.com, and Zen Habitats — solve all three problems. They retain heat and humidity, the opaque sides provide security, and the front-opening doors are a practical joy compared to lifting a screen lid off a glass tank.
If you’re starting with a glass tank, make it work by covering three sides with foam board or a dark backdrop, sealing most of the screen lid with HVAC tape or a sheet of acrylic, and laying down 3-4 inches of a substrate that holds moisture. A 40-gallon breeder is the absolute floor for an adult — anything smaller is inadequate no matter what a pet store employee tells you.
A good ball python enclosure feels cluttered. Two identical hides (one warm, one cool), a large water bowl heavy enough that the snake can’t tip it, branches for climbing (they climb more than people expect), and enough fake or real plants that the snake can cross the enclosure without feeling exposed. An exposed ball python is a stressed ball python, and a stressed ball python stops eating.
The Numbers That Matter
Temperature and humidity are the two dials that determine whether your ball python eats or starves, sheds cleanly or peels off in ribbons, breathes easily or develops a respiratory infection.
Temperature: The warm side should sit at 88-92°F (31-33°C) measured on the surface of the substrate. The cool side at 78-82°F (25-28°C). Ambient air temperature should never drop below 75°F. A temperature drop into the low 70s for a few hours won’t kill a healthy snake, but sustained low temperatures suppress the immune system, slow digestion to the point of causing regurgitation, and make the snake vulnerable to respiratory infections.
Heat mats are the classic starter setup and they work — if they’re controlled by a thermostat. An unregulated heat mat can run away to 120°F and burn a snake that can’t escape fast enough. Tape the thermostat probe between the mat and the glass on the outside of the enclosure, never inside where the snake can knock it loose. Set the thermostat for 90°F and verify with a temperature gun.
Overhead heat from a ceramic heat emitter or a deep heat projector inside a cage-mounted fixture is arguably better — it creates a more natural ambient temperature and doesn’t rely on belly heat the way a mat does. Many breeders use both: overhead for ambient, mat for a 24/7 warm spot.
Humidity: 50-60% is the target range. Anything sustained below 50% and your snake will start shedding in pieces, which means stuck eyecaps, tail tip constriction, and a seriously uncomfortable animal. Crank humidity to 65-75% during shed and you’ll see one clean, complete shed every time.
Deep substrate is the best humidity hack for a ball python enclosure. A 3-4 inch layer of coconut husk, cypress mulch, or a topsoil-sand-cococoir blend holds moisture at the bottom while staying dry on top, which prevents scale rot. Pour water directly into the corners of the substrate rather than misting the surface. The water soaks into the bottom layer and releases humidity slowly over days. Misting spikes humidity for an hour and dries back out — it’s a maintenance chore, not a solution.
Feeding: Thawed Is the Only Way
Ball pythons in the wild eat African soft-furred rats, gerbils, and the occasional bird. In captivity, they eat frozen-thawed domestic rats or mice from a supplier. The word “frozen-thawed” deserves emphasis because feeding live rodents to a captive snake is a welfare problem for the rodent and a safety problem for the snake. A live rat left alone in an enclosure with a ball python that isn’t hungry will eventually start chewing — there are documented photos of snakes missing chunks of flesh because a feeder rat was left overnight.
Thaw frozen rodents in the refrigerator overnight, or in a sealed bag submerged in cold water for an hour or two. Never microwave them. Warm the rodent to roughly body temperature by letting the sealed bag sit in hot (not boiling) water for 10-15 minutes before offering. Use tongs. Dangle the rodent by the tail or the scruff and wiggle it gently in front of the hide entrance. Most ball pythons strike from the cover of their hide — offering a rodent out in the open is less natural and may be ignored.
Prey size matters. The rodent should be approximately the same width as the thickest part of the snake’s body. A slight bulge after swallowing is normal; a dramatic sausage-like distortion means the prey was too large.
Feeding frequency: every 7 days for juveniles, every 10-14 days for adults. Some large adult males do fine on a 14-21 day schedule. An overweight ball python develops fatty deposits along the spine and tail, and obesity in snakes is a slow killer. If you can’t see a defined spine but the snake looks round like a sausage, scale back feeding frequency.
The Hunger Strike Survival Guide
Ball pythons refuse food for reasons that would barely register with other species. A hide that’s a few degrees too cool. A new water bowl that smells different. Breeding season hormones. An enclosure change they haven’t processed yet. Winter. Spring. Tuesday.
The hierarchy of troubleshooting when your ball python stops eating:
- Check your numbers. Temp gun the warm hide surface. Digital hygrometer on the cool side. If the warm side isn’t hitting 88°F or the humidity reads below 45%, fix that first.
- Don’t handle them. Every handling session triggers a stress response that suppresses appetite. Put the snake down and leave it alone for a week.
- Try different prey. Some ball pythons imprint on a specific prey type and won’t accept anything else. If yours was eating rats and suddenly won’t, try a mouse. Try an African soft-fur if you can source them. Try offering at night with the lights off.
- Weigh weekly. A gram scale with a container is essential equipment. An adult ball python that loses 10% of its body weight over several months needs a vet visit. A snake that’s holding steady at the same weight for weeks while refusing food is just being a ball python.
- Check for shed. Ball pythons in shed almost never eat. The eyes turn milky blue (“in blue”), then clear up, then the snake sheds a few days later. Don’t offer food during any part of this cycle.
Shedding and Health
A healthy, well-hydrated ball python sheds in one piece — eyecaps included. If your snake leaves behind pieces, especially on the tail tip or head, the humidity was too low. Don’t pull stuck shed off manually. Give the snake a humid hide (a Tupperware container with a hole cut in the lid and damp sphagnum moss inside) for 24 hours. The stuck pieces usually come off on their own.
Respiratory infections in ball pythons sound exactly like what you’d expect: wheezing, clicking, or popping noises when the snake breathes. The mouth may gape open with strings of mucus visible inside. These infections are almost always caused by chronic low temperatures or high humidity combined with poor ventilation. A snake wheezing needs a vet, antibiotics, and a serious husbandry review.
Scale rot appears as brown, crusty, or blistered scales on the belly. It’s caused by a snake sitting on perpetually wet substrate. Dry out the enclosure, switch to paper towels temporarily, and apply a diluted betadine solution to the affected area. Advanced cases need a vet.
A ball python in a correctly set up enclosure is nearly bulletproof. For a snake, they’re low-maintenance and remarkably tolerant of the learning curve new keepers inevitably ride. Give them a PVC box with two hides, steady heat, water they can soak in, and a thawed rat every ten days — they’ll do the rest.
