Pacman Frog Care Guide: Setup, Food & Everything Beginners Need


You don’t really “keep” a Pacman frog so much as you maintain a damp hole and occasionally throw insects into it. The frog will spend most of its life buried up to the eyeballs in substrate, motionless, waiting for something edible to walk past. When something does, the hole explodes — a flash of tongue, a crunch, and the frog resettles into the dirt like nothing happened. Then it won’t move again for three days.

That’s the deal with Ceratophrys. They’re not climbing frogs, not social frogs, not frogs you handle on the couch while watching Netflix. They’re earthen ambush predators built around a stomach and a set of jaws that can crush a mouse. If that sounds incredible, you’re going to love keeping one. If it sounds boring, get a tree frog.

What You’re Actually Buying

The Pacman frog in the pet store is almost certainly Ceratophrys cranwelli, the Chacoan horned frog, which was hybridized extensively with other Ceratophrys species to create the vivid yellow, orange, green, and albino morphs sold at expos and chain stores. Wild-type individuals look like a fallen leaf — browns and tans with dark blotches — and you’ll rarely see them for sale.

A healthy adult female reaches five to six inches across and can weigh over a pound. Males top out around three to four inches and are half the weight. The size gap is stark and important: if you pick up an unsexed juvenile at an expo, don’t plan your enclosure around the frog it is right now. Plan it around the grapefruit-sized animal it could become in eighteen months.

Lifespan in captivity runs 6 to 10 years for males, 8 to 15 for females. Females live longer — the inverse of most species — because males have a faster metabolism and tend to grow and burn out faster. A female Pacman that avoids obesity and has clean, damp substrate will outlast several generations of cell phones and at least one presidential administration.

Building the Hole

A Pacman frog needs horizontal floor space, not height. A 10-gallon tank handles a juvenile. A 20-gallon long is a more honest permanent home for an adult, especially a female that needs room to burrow, turn around, and occupy a warm spot or a cool spot as her internal thermostat dictates. They don’t climb, so a screen lid exists purely to keep crickets in and cats out.

Substrate matters more than the tank size. Coco coir or Eco Earth, three to four inches deep, damp but not waterlogged — squeeze a handful and it should clump without dripping. Your frog’s entire world is about six inches of dirt. If that dirt is too dry, the frog dehydrates. Too wet, the frog develops bacterial skin infections. The Goldilocks zone is “slightly damp to the touch, refreshed with misting once or twice a day.”

No gravel. No sand. No bark chips. Every one of these gets swallowed during a feeding lunge and causes impaction. A frog that eats a mouthful of gravel while grabbing a cricket won’t show symptoms for days, and by the time you notice it’s stopped pooping, the blockage may already be fatal. A water dish should be shallow and wide — think a ceramic plant saucer — with dechlorinated water no deeper than the frog’s chin. They soak to hydrate through their skin. Change it daily. Every Pacman frog treats its water dish as a combination bathtub, toilet, and ambush blind — expect to clean it often.

Plants are optional. A Pacman will uproot anything planted directly in the substrate, so potted pothos or snake plants placed behind decor are the safe route. Heat, Humidity, and The Number That Matters

Temperature gradient: warm side 80-85°F, cool side 70-75°F. Achieve this with an under-tank heat mat on one side, controlled by a thermostat with the probe between the mat and the glass outside the tank — never inside where the frog can bury against it. A ceramic heat emitter above works too, but Pacman frogs burrow down to regulate temperature, so belly heat from below is the more natural option for a species that spends daylight hours underground.

Digital thermometer on both sides. Not the plastic stick-on dial things that came with the starter kit. Those are off by 5 to 10 degrees in the wrong direction often enough that you cannot rely on them.

Humidity should hover between 60 and 80%. Mist every morning with a hand sprayer, and again at night if your ambient humidity is low. If you’re in a dry climate or running the heater through winter, laying a sheet of acrylic or plastic wrap over half the screen lid slows the evaporation rate. The substrate should stay damp at depth — the top quarter-inch can dry out between mistings.

The Feeding Schedule People Get Wrong

A hatchling Pacman frog the size of a quarter eats pinhead crickets and small dubia roach nymphs daily. By three months, it’s eating every other day. By adulthood — around 12 to 18 months — the schedule drops to twice a week, maybe three times for a particularly active individual.

The mistake that kills more Pacman frogs than anything else is overfeeding. A captive Pacman frog expends almost zero energy. It doesn’t hunt. It doesn’t travel. It digs a hole and stays there. If you feed it on the schedule your heart tells you is generous rather than the schedule its body actually needs, you’re giving it fatty liver disease wrapped in affection.

Dust every insect meal with calcium powder. Use calcium with D3 unless you’re providing UVB, in which case use calcium without D3. Add a multivitamin dusting once a week. That’s the entire supplementation strategy. Three products in rotation, and the frog will never develop metabolic bone disease.

Earthworms make an excellent supplement to the insect rotation — they’re high in protein, low in fat, and Pacman frogs typically take them with more enthusiasm than crickets. Cut nightcrawlers into sections sized to the frog’s mouth. Silversides and appropriately-sized dubia roaches round out a varied diet that doesn’t rely on any single feeder insect.

Can they eat mice? Technically yes. Here’s why they usually shouldn’t. A pinky mouse every four to six weeks, for an adult frog over four inches wide, is a heavy, fatty meal that should be treated as rare enrichment, not a food group. A Pacman raised on earthworms and dubia roaches will live longer than one fed a regular rodent rotation.

Sexing and The Bite

Male Pacman frogs develop nuptial pads — dark, rough patches on the inside of their thumbs — and they vocalize. The call sounds like a short, low bleat or a distant cow mooing. They usually do it at night after misting when they’re feeling particularly motivated to find a mate they will never meet.

Females are silent, noticeably larger, and don’t develop the thumb pads. The definitive way to sex a young frog is by size and shape: females grow faster and wider, males stay proportionally smaller.

As for the bite — yes, they bite. A baby Pacman grabbing your finger feels like getting pinched by a plastic clothespin. An adult female clamping down is a genuinely painful experience that will draw blood through those blunt but powerful jaw muscles and the two sharp vomerine teeth on the roof of her mouth. The bite isn’t venomous, isn’t dangerous, and doesn’t warrant more than soap, water, and a band-aid. If she won’t let go, run lukewarm water over her head or gently slide a thin plastic card into the corner of her mouth to break the suction. Never yank — you’ll tear your skin and her jaw.

The frogs don’t bite out of aggression. They bite because your finger is warm and moving, and their brain categorizes anything warm and moving as food. Use tongs. The distance between your hand and the frog during feeding is the distance between you and a very surprising Tuesday evening.

The Hospital Tank and When Things Go Wrong

A Pacman frog that stops eating, sits above the substrate for days, or develops redness on its belly has a husbandry problem. The fix, nine times out of ten, is a hospital tank. Line a small plastic bin with damp paper towels. Replace the towels daily. Keep the bin warm. Don’t offer food for 48 hours. If the frog was sitting on fouled substrate or soaking in dirty water, the hospital tank alone often resolves the issue within a week.

Toxing out — acute poisoning through skin absorption — is a separate, faster emergency. Legs extended stiffly backward, twitching, and complete unresponsiveness are the red flags. A honey bath and an immediate hospital setup are the first moves, and you need to figure out what the frog absorbed — chlorinated water, soap residue, ammonia from old substrate — or it’ll happen again.

Pacman frogs are simple animals. They need space, warmth, water, and food, and they’ll accept almost nothing else from you. That simplicity is the appeal. Set the tank up right at the start, and the frog will reward you with the sound of a cricket crunching in the dark for the next ten years.
